Like all Universities of Applied Sciences the Fachhochschule Bielefeld is particularly committed to practice-oriented teaching and research. Maintaining close communication with the economy, science and the arts, the Universities of Applied Sciences strive for a constant customisation of their courses.
At present the Fachhochschule Bielefeld can offer 21 courses in 8 different departments. Subject related, practice-oriented work as well as integrated practical semesters in many courses are specific to studying at a University of Applied Sciences.
Since its foundation the Fachhochschule Bielefeld has aimed at internationalising its work, in accordance with regional conditions. German students have the opportunity to do part of their studies and/or a practical training period abroad. On the other hand many foreign students opt for studying at the Fachhochschule Bielefeld.
In 1991 the Fachhochschule Bielefeld established the International Relations Office (Akademisches Auslandsamt) to take care of foreign students and facilitate their academic start. Student volunteers from all departments will support you with regard to organisational problems, dealings with the authorities and the completion of the various forms you might encounter, besides giving you many a hint for leisure-time activities.
The Fachhochschule Bielefeld is not a campus university in the traditional sense. The departments are spread across Bielefeld. The departments of architecture and civil engineering are situated in the town of Minden, approx. 40 km north of Bielefeld. In the middle ages Minden was an important episcopate, and the famous cathedral is still there to be admired.

Structure and organisation of studies
Studies at a University of Applied Sciences differ quite significantly from studying at a University. Universities tend to leave the duration and organisation of studies in the hands of the students themselves, whereas Universities of Applied Sciences organise the studies for their students by stipulating a tight and strict study plan. As a result, students at a University of Applied Sciences usually complete their studies in less time (7-8 semesters).The study courses themselves are much more practice-oriented than those offered at universities. You will have made contact with your field of future employment well before trying to find a job, which can be very advantageous for your job prospects after completing your course.
Further information on the course you have chosen may be obtained from the respective programme of lectures or from asking at the introductory tutorials. Programmes of lectures can be obtained from your respective department. The catalogue for the entire Fachhochschule with the complete study plans for all courses, including all relevant addresses and telephone numbers, can be purchased at the academic registrar's office (Studierendensekretariat) or local bookshops.
There are a number of compulsory seminars and classes which you are required to attend and to take part in. Other lectures and classes can be chosen from a variety of offers. However, you are required to complete at least a minimum of those options. In each of the compulsory or elective subjects you will have to pass examinations at the end of each semester. Bearing that in mind, you are well advised to start preparing for those examinations early during term time. The subjects you want to sit examinations in have to be declared to the examination board before a certain deadline, notice of which is usually put up on the notice board of your department at the beginning of each semester.
