Welcome to HSBI!

With the Faculties of Design and Art, Minden Campus, Engineering and Mathematics, Social Sciences, Bielefeld School of Business and Health at our three campuses in Bielefeld, Minden and Gütersloh, Hochschule Bielefeld – University of Applied Sciences and Arts (HSBI) works closely together with the industrial and business communities and social and cultural institutes in East Westphalia.

Small study groups allow us to provide guidance and support. Designated study centres, the university library and student workplaces create an excellent learning environment.

Research on Sustainable Technologies from an Equal Opportunities Perspective: HSBI’s New Horizons Fellowship Makes It Possible for Visiting Scholar from Bhutan

Since August, visiting scholar Dr. Hari Kumar Suberi from Bhutan has been conducting research on sustainable technologies as parts of networked systems on HSBI’s Minden Campus, focusing on women as disseminators of technologies. Suberi’s stay was made possible by the “New Horizons Fellowship,” which is being awarded to researchers from the Global South with reference to equal opportunities issues for the first time this year.

HSBI and the University of Tübingen Are Developing an Alternative to Glyphosate

Glyphosate reliably destroys unwanted plants, is used worldwide – and has been hotly disputed for years because of its negative effects on the environment and health. A ban on the herbicide in Germany and possibly even in the whole EU has hung in the air for a long time. Good thing that a better alternative is in sight: in a cooperation project with the University of Tübingen funded by the Federal Ministry for Education and Research, doctoral candidates at HSBI are working on an environmentally friendly herbicide based on a natural sugar from cyanobacteria. The preliminary results are promising.

“A Warm Welcome at HSBI:” How a Fungus Researcher from Brazil Arrives in Bielefeld

The International Office’s Welcome Center supports international researchers who come to HSBI. Thanks to the assistance provided by Maximilian Köster, Daniela Milanez Silva from São Paulo made it through the organisational jungle of offices, banks and telephone companies – and was thus able to quickly devote herself to her actual topic: the technical investigation of fungi used as natural pesticides.

Attract, Then Kill: Fungus Makes Insect Pest Control More Ecological – Summa Cum Laude for Doctoral Project of HSBI Researcher

She is creative, good at networking and has expertise in her special subject that only few early researchers have. Co-supervised by HSBI, the doctoral project submitted by Linda Muskat shows enormous potential. Her topic: How are insect pest control agents designed that are completely biodegradable? Her companion throughout the project: a fungus called Pandora.
