Dual Bachelor Study Course Nursing (B.Sc.)
Learning objectives
The Dual Bachelor Study Course in Nursing combines both a broad, science-based and an application-orientated qualification. Theoretical and practical subjects provide you with skills for the provision of comprehensive nursing care in complex situations. As a member of different teams involving disciplines such as physicians and therapists you will also learn to professionally contribute to optimal patient-centred care.
In this study course, you will acquire science-based knowledge, abilities and skills required to support healthy individuals as well as those in need of nursing care and their families in a variety of situations and environments. Apart from gaining competence for physical nursing tasks, you will also learn to offer counselling and advice on health-related issues.
During your studies, a further focus will be on the cooperation with colleagues from other professions as well as coordination of operational and organisational procedures within institutions in order to allow for optimum nursing care.
Qualification Profile
Graduates of this programme are able to
- professionally assess nursing and support needs and to select, deliver and evaluate adequate nursing interventions
- adequately counsel, support and advise individuals in a variety of situations
- identify potential for improvements in the nursing service and to initiate the implementation of innovation
- inform their professional work by knowledge and methodology from current nursing research and to join in research projects
- provide mentorship and leadership for student nurses, persons on work experience and new staff in the nursing team
- recognize health hazards and to initiate prevention measures and projects.
Course structure
This eight-semester study course offers the opportunity to acquire two qualifications within four years
- Professional qualification in Nursing after 3.5 years
- Academic Bachelor of Science degree after four years.
The study course incorporates ten periods of practice learning in a variety of professional fields. During these periods, you will be professionally tutored and accompanied by mentors and clinical teachers. In co-operation with your respective practice institution you will also design and implement two projects.
The study course is organized in a modular structure and is taught at different locations, namely the co-operating Nursing School, FH Bielefeld and the practice institutions. Each module closes with an end-of-term exam. In semester 8 you have the choice of a module according to your interest:
- Outpatient care for the elderly
- Outpatient care for children
- Care for patients with life-threatening diseases
During the study course, when you have completed the 3rd semester, you will have the opportunity for a practice period abroad.
You may choose between the Bielefeld campus or the Minden campus as your study venue. In Bielefeld, the FH co-operates with ZAB in Gütersloh. In Minden, the FH co-operates with the Mühlenkreiskliniken. Please address your application to either of them.
Entry requirements
- Higher Education Entrance Qualification, general or specialized, or other prior education accredited as equivalent
- Legally valid contract for education with a co-operating partner. Current partners are Mühlenkreiskliniken Minden and ZAB Gütersloh.

Applications and start of studies
Stage one of the procedure is the application for the Dual Study Course to ZAB or Mühlenkreiskliniken from autumn of the year previous to the beginning of studies. Upon signing the contract for education, in stage two a written application to Studierendensekretariat of FH Bielefeld is required, including CV, certified copies of the school leaving certificate and contract for education not later than 15th July of the year studies commence.
Studies start in winter term from 1st September.
