Especially in large cities and other densely crowded areas, vertical farming can provide an efficient and eco-friendly way to feed people. While indoor vertical farming plants are usually highly automatized, outdoor approaches are usually less professionally setup and thus often prone to drying-out, in this way disturbing of even destroying the plants grown in such setups. Here we report on semi-automated irrigation systems, combined with different textile substrates to reduce the risk of fully dried substrates, in order to make inexpensive, successful vertical farming systems available for everybody.' article_number: '012020' article_type: original author: - first_name: L full_name: Dirkes, L last_name: Dirkes - first_name: J D full_name: Massanés, J D last_name: Massanés - first_name: Robin full_name: Böttjer, Robin last_name: Böttjer - first_name: Jan Lukas full_name: Storck, Jan Lukas id: '221157' last_name: Storck orcid: 0000-0002-6841-8791 - first_name: Andrea full_name: Ehrmann, Andrea id: '223776' last_name: Ehrmann orcid: 0000-0003-0695-3905 citation: alphadin: 'Dirkes, L ; Massanés, J D ; Böttjer, Robin ; Storck, Jan Lukas ; Ehrmann, Andrea: Outdoor vertical farming on textile substrates. To overcome the problems of relatively low production speed and in several cases insufficient mechanical properties of 3D printed objects, 3D printing can be combined with larger-scale production processes, e.g. by directly printing on textile fabrics. To combine the advantages of both materials, e.g. tensile strength of a woven fabric with stiffness of an imprinted layer, the adhesion between both partners under mechanical load has to be investigated. Here, we use tensile tests to examine maximum forces, elongation at break, wearing out of the composites and the adhesion under maximized or repeated tensile stress to examine the applicability of such composites for sports shoes etc.' article_number: '012019' article_type: original author: - first_name: M full_name: Ayvali, M last_name: Ayvali - first_name: L full_name: Bussieweke, L last_name: Bussieweke - first_name: G full_name: Druzinin, G last_name: Druzinin - first_name: M full_name: Korkmaz, M last_name: Korkmaz - first_name: Andrea full_name: Ehrmann, Andrea id: '223776' last_name: Ehrmann orcid: 0000-0003-0695-3905 orcid_put_code_url: https://api.orcid.org/v2.0/0000-0003-0695-3905/work/105571598 citation: alphadin: 'Ayvali, M ; Bussieweke, L ; Druzinin, G ; Korkmaz, M ; Ehrmann, Andrea: 3D printing on warp-knitted fabrics.
