TY - JOUR AB - Digital participation has become an important issue in modern societies, typically focusing on groups prone to marginalization. From this perspective, less attention has yet been paid to imprisoned persons. Many penitentiary systems are formally characterized by the basic requirement of resocialization. Accordingly, life in prison should be largely adapted to conditions outside and to fundamental social changes, which must be considered in designing the framework for prison systems. Still, the digital opening of the prison is debated controversially, not least due to anticipated security issues. Hence, to raise awareness about challenges for digital participation of prisoners, we conducted a knowledge-sociological analysis (SKAD) of the public discourse on the use of ICT by prison inmates in Germany. We thereby seek to advance knowledge and insights from social and organizational practice arising from the use of ICT in context of total institutions and create the basis for action from a socio-informatics perspective. In the welfare context, however, they are still being explored only marginally. The following theoretical discussion draws on the example of the MAEWIN project to explore the challenges of using big data when developing decision support systems in the context of social work. The project reveals some similarities with the well-known challenges of big data research (e.g., with regard to data protection, bias, and handling probabilities). However, it also has to face further challenges such as the different knowledge approaches within social work. Empirical evidence of the relationship between social support and post-disaster mental health provides support for a general beneficial effect of social support (main-effect model; Wheaton, 1985). From a theoretical perspective, a buffering effect of social support on the negative relationship between disaster-related stress and mental health also seems plausible (stress-buffering model; Wheaton, 1985). Previous studies, however, (a) have paid less attention to the buffering effect of social support and (b) have mainly relied on interpersonal support (but not collective-level support such as community resilience) when investigating this issue. This previous work might have underestimated the effect of support on post-disaster mental health. Building on a sample of residents in Germany recently affected by flooding (N=118), we show that community resilience to flooding (but not general interpersonal social support) buffered against the negative effects of flooding on post-disaster mental health. The results support the stress-buffering model and call for a more detailed look at the relationship between support and resilience and post-disaster adjustment, including collective-level variables. Such circuits exhibit a nondeterministic behavior and are much harder to characterize in contrast to electronic logic circuits. Approaches to analyzing the threshold values and timing analysis of single or cascaded genetic logic circuits have been previously proposed, however, they suffer from long latency. There is a potential for parallelizing the procedure which verifies the obtained threshold values for obtaining lower run times. In this work, we introduce a fast approach to estimating threshold values through a parallelized verification procedure.
